Generative AI Set to Revolutionize Holiday Retail: Insights from U.S. Executives
NEW YORK, Nov. 25, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — As the holiday shopping season approaches, excitement and innovation are brewing in the retail sector. A recent survey by NLX, an AI platform renowned for delivering advanced conversational experiences, has shed light on the transformative potential of generative AI in retail. Conducted by QuestionPro, this research captures insights from U.S. retail executives about their expectations and implementations surrounding generative AI.
With a substantial 59% of respondents believing that generative AI will significantly elevate sales, and an even greater 66% expecting improvements in customer satisfaction, it’s clear that the retail landscape is on the cusp of a major shift. “We believe the retailers that successfully deploy generative AI to delight shoppers will have a significant advantage,” says Andrei Papancea, CEO of NLX.
In fact, an impressive 92% of retail executives reported plans to have customer-facing generative AI solutions ready for the bustling 2024 holiday shopping season.
The survey’s findings revealed that 95% of respondents believe generative AI will either significantly or moderately impact sales and customer satisfaction. Just 4% thought AI would have minimal sales impact, while only 1% posited it would have no effect at all. The sentiment is optimistic: “It’s fascinating how much enthusiasm there is around generative AI’s potential this holiday season,” comments Papancea. “Retailers that effectively harness these technologies stand to gain a competitive edge.”
Challenges and Opportunities in AI Implementation
Despite the excitement, implementing generative AI isn’t without its challenges. Retail executives highlighted cost, business risk, change management, and unclear return on investment (ROI) as key hurdles. However, the anticipated benefits of AI are driving interest. Among the popular applications considered, conversation-based product recommendations lead the way, followed closely by AI-generated communications and customer service automation. Interestingly, 59% of executives indicated they would also harness AI to streamline business processes like buying and merchandising.
High Consumer Expectations
The expectation among consumers is just as high. An overwhelming 92% of retail executives noted that shoppers now anticipate generative AI to be part of their shopping experiences. “It’s surprising to consider how consumers’ adoption of generative AI has outpaced its application in retail,” remarks Papancea. “As more retailers begin to implement these technologies, we’re likely to see a shift in customer behavior and preferences.
A Survey with Impact
This survey, conducted in early October 2024, gathered 100 responses from retail executives across the United States—primarily from companies with over 500 employees. The feedback reflects a collective optimism and willingness to innovate, setting the stage for a potentially groundbreaking holiday season.
