First Look at The Russo Brothers’ "The Electric State" Starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt
The anticipation is building, as Netflix gears up for the release of The Electric State, set to hit screens in 2025. Directed by the acclaimed Russo Brothers, known for their work on Avengers: Endgame, the film boasts an impressive cast featuring Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Anthony Mackie, and more.
Behind the Scenes
Vanity Fair has recently unveiled the first images from the film, showcasing a thrilling showdown between Brown and Pratt’s characters and a menacing group of animatronic robots. Leading this mechanical cadre is none other than Mr. Peanut, the beloved Planters mascot, who surprisingly finds himself navigating deeper themes of free will and equality.
Joe Russo elaborated on the film’s intriguing plot: “These robots had the most benign appearance possible, and they end up feeling that they’re being mistreated and have a desire to be treated as equals with humans, which leads to a war. Now you have this strange dichotomy where these seemingly harmless service bots are trying to kill you.”
What to Expect from The Electric State
In this dystopian narrative, Brown plays Michelle, a young woman embarking on a quest to find her brother, whom she thought was lost forever. Chris Pratt takes on the role of Keats, a truck driver and veteran, navigating a world where robots and humans collide.
Notably, Anthony Mackie lends his voice to Herman, a construction robot, while Woody Harrelson will portray the iconic Mr. Peanut. The star-studded ensemble also features Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci, and Giancarlo Esposito in various roles, with Brian Cox and Alan Tudyk voicing additional robots.
From Graphic Novel to Screen
The Electric State is adapted from Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 graphic novel of the same name. With a screenplay penned by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the film promises not only stunning visuals but also thought-provoking themes. The Russo Brothers faced an interesting challenge in securing Woody Harrelson for the role of Mr. Peanut, as the parent company, Hormel Foods, expressed initial concerns regarding the portrayal of their iconic character. Thankfully, they ultimately embraced the creative vision, allowing the filmmakers the freedom to integrate Mr. Peanut into the narrative seamlessly.
Joe Russo remarked on this collaboration: “It was a delicate balance because you don’t want to overwhelm the movie with commercialism. But we felt that Mr. Peanut was fitting for the tone of the design of the other robots, and we thought it funny that he was essentially their Atticus Finch—a thoughtful peanut with a cane and a top hat.”
Looking Ahead
As we await the film’s release in early 2025, the excitement surrounding The Electric State is palpable. The combination of stellar performances, a compelling narrative, and the unique visual style of the Russo Brothers has set the stage for a must-see sci-fi spectacle.
