Sarawak Teams Shine at World Robot Olympiad 2024
KUCHING (Sept 30) – It’s been a triumphant week for Sarawak’s robotics teams at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Open Championship 2024 in Brescia, Italy. From September 25-28, our talented young minds showcased their skills on a global stage, bringing home impressive accolades.
Stellar Performances
Leading the charge was SMK Chung Hua Miri, who clinched the top spot in the Robo Sports category. The team, composed of Elson Kieu Chee Yang, Sim Zhi Yang, and Sasha Liz Liew, excelled under the guidance of coach Lai Jia Ling. Their hard work and innovative thinking truly paid off, demonstrating the vibrant talent emerging from Sarawak.
In the Robo Mission category, the Institut Pendidikan Guru Miri Campus team, featuring Chang Pei Ru, Muhammad Asy Syakirin Razlan, and Desmond Sii Chong Sheng, grabbed the runner-up position. Coaches Dr. Hu Laey Nee and Dr. Norsarihan Ahmad provided invaluable support throughout the competition.
Additionally, SJK(C) Chung Hua Miri made an impressive showing, finishing sixth among a competitive field of 52 teams. Their members—Kieran Chia Yuen Soong, Kingsley Yeo Eng Sing, and Shermaine Yong Ee Shuen—were coached by Wong Ma Li.
Sarawak’s Rising Stars
This notable success is further highlighted by the fact that three of the six teams representing Malaysia hailed from Sarawak. The state’s Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) played a crucial role in backing these teams, showcasing the commitment to fostering exceptional talent in the region.
“This victory is a significant milestone for Sarawak and Malaysia in the global robotics landscape,” MEITD remarked. “It is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and talent of the students, their coaches, and all those who have supported their journey.”
The WRO aims to ignite enthusiasm for robotics education among youth aged eight to 19, promoting the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through engaging competitions. This year’s event had 238 teams from 47 countries compete across four categories: Robo Mission, Robo Sports, Future Innovators, and Future Engineers.
The Road Ahead
As Sarawak celebrates these achievements, it’s clear that the future of robotics is bright. These students not only exemplify creativity and technical skills but also represent the potential of the Malaysian youth on the international stage.
Being involved in such competitions drives innovation and inspires the next generation to explore STEM fields, ultimately shaping leaders of tomorrow. Local robotics enthusiasts and educators can take heart in these victories, knowing that our young innovators are continuing to thrive.
