Sri Lankan Students Shine at Global Robotics Competition in Greece
A talented team of students from Dharmapala College, St. Sebastian’s College, and Elizabeth Moir School has put Sri Lanka on the global map by clinching the prestigious Zhang Heng Award for Engineering Design at the 6th Global Challenge Robotics Competition 2024, which took place in the historic city of Athens, Greece, from September 26 to 29.
Competing against bright minds from an impressive 193 countries, the team—comprised of Raveen Akuretiyawa, Tharul Senanayake, Heveen Ramachandra, Supul Baddegama, and Malik Radigal—showcased their innovative engineering solutions. Their hard work paid off as they not only secured the award but also finished an admirable sixth place overall in a competition that featured over 100 teams.
Celebrating Innovation and Team Spirit
The Sri Lankan team’s groundbreaking innovation was celebrated, marking them as industry leaders in a competitive environment. Their creativity and determination led them to the top spot, overshadowing strong contenders from Colombia and India. It’s a phenomenal achievement that reflects not only their individual talents but also the collaborative spirit fostered within their schools.
Upon their return, the students were warmly welcomed at Bandaranaike International Airport, greeted by friends, family, and supporters. This homecoming is a testament to the pride and excitement their achievement has brought to their communities back home.
Addressing Real-World Challenges with Robotics
The Global Challenge Robotics Competition aims to inspire young minds to harness the power of technology in tackling real-life problems. This focus on practical solutions aligns perfectly with today’s global landscape where innovation is key to overcoming challenges.
Engaging Young Innovators
The competition provokes a sense of creativity in students, motivating them to think outside the box. This experience underscores the importance of robotics and engineering in advancing not just individual careers but also nations. The students’ journey can serve as an inspiration for others to pursue their interests in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
A Bright Future Ahead
With achievements like this, we can only imagine the potential that lies within the youth of Sri Lanka. They have demonstrated that with the right guidance and opportunities, local students can shine on international platforms. The hard work and innovation shown by these students lay a strong foundation for future generations interested in technology and engineering.
As the world becomes increasingly reliant on technology, fostering a culture of innovation among young individuals is essential. The path these students have paved is both inspiring and encouraging for aspiring engineers across the nation and beyond.
