Hon Hai Precision Industry Set to Expand Server Capacity Amid Surge in AI Demand
Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., commonly known as Foxconn, is gearing up to significantly expand its server capacity to cater to the booming demand for Nvidia Corp. chips used in artificial intelligence (AI) development. This move indicates the company’s confidence that spending on AI technology will remain strong for the foreseeable future.
Surging Demand for AI Technology
During a recent interview with Bloomberg Television, Hon Hai’s Chairman, Young Liu, described the interest in the next-generation Blackwell chips as “crazy.” This statement parallels comments made by Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, underscoring an industry-wide enthusiasm for the capabilities these advanced chips bring to AI applications.
To support this growth, Hon Hai is in the process of constructing the world’s largest server assembly plant in Mexico, specifically designed for Nvidia’s cutting-edge Grace Blackwell chips. Liu announced that by 2025, the planned capacity for this facility will reach a staggering 20,000 GB200 NVL 72 servers, marking a significant scale-up in production.
Unpredictable Demand Trends
Liu expressed surprise at the continued surge in demand for computational resources, acknowledging that some experts anticipated a saturation point soon. “There was a lot of talk that the need for compute may be saturated pretty soon. But it looks like the demand is still growing. So that’s beyond our expectations,” he remarked. This sentiment reflects a broader optimism in the tech industry about the future of AI and its applications across various sectors.
Challenges in Production
Despite the positive outlook, Hon Hai is facing some production hurdles. Liu noted a “hiccup” in the manufacturing of the GB200 servers, confirming that there will be a delay in the supply of Blackwell chips. Shipments are now expected to commence in late Q4, instead of the earlier projected start in the October-December timeframe.
Nonetheless, Nvidia’s Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress conveyed optimism during an August briefing, indicating that the company expects to ship several billion dollars’ worth of Blackwell chips in its fiscal fourth quarter.
A Bright Future for AI
As the world leans more into AI technology, companies like Hon Hai and Nvidia are positioning themselves at the forefront of this revolution. The integration of AI into various industries—from healthcare to finance—demonstrates the transformative power of these technologies.
