Hong Kong Poised to Become AI Development Hub
Hong Kong stands on the brink of becoming a leading hub for artificial intelligence (AI) application development, propelled by proactive government policies and its role in the broader tech ecosystem of the Greater Bay Area. This potential was highlighted during a recent panel discussion at the InnoTech Forum 2024.
Sony Han, the IBM iX leader at IBM Consulting Hong Kong, emphasized the urgency of this transformation. “It’s almost essential for Hong Kong to become an AI development hub in the next three to five years,” he noted, pointing out the unique diversity of Hong Kong’s digital landscape derived from its integration within the bay area’s various digital ecosystems.
However, challenges remain. According to Maryann Tseng, head of international equity markets at SenseTime, both public and private sectors must ramp up funding to establish the crucial computing and energy infrastructures necessary for this transformation. She highlighted recent government initiatives that have provided subsidies, including access to graphics processing units (GPUs) and AI data centers, as pivotal steps in this journey.
To further bolster investment in AI development, Tseng proposed the creation of a “fund of funds,” which would effectively channel more capital into the city’s burgeoning AI ecosystem. “Here in Hong Kong, there has been a lot more subsidies being provided by the government,” she explained, but noted the need for enhanced market participation.
But it’s not just about dollars and cents. Tseng raised an important question: “Are consumers ready to use an AI-empowered environment? Are enterprises willing to invest in these applications?” Fostering awareness and readiness among users will be essential in driving demand for innovative AI technologies.
As discussions unfolded at the InnoTech Forum, it became clear that both the government and private sectors are taking critical steps to shape a robust AI landscape in Hong Kong. With vital computing infrastructure being prioritized, the city’s potential as a focal point for AI development is increasingly within reach.
