Landus Cooperative Embraces AI Technology, Restructures Workforce
In a bid to revolutionize farming practices, Landus Cooperative, an Ames-based agriculture company, has initiated significant changes within its ranks, including dramatic layoffs and a shift towards advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Around 55 employees, amounting to roughly 10% of its Iowa workforce, were laid off on Friday, a decision CEO and President Matt Carstens explained during an interview.
The layoffs, which were communicated via a virtual Teams call, affected various levels and locations within the company. Carstens emphasized that these measures are part of a broader strategy that has been in the works for five years, aimed at fostering a workforce that aligns with Landus’s forward-thinking vision.
"We’re really excited for what that future holds," Carstens noted. "But the big step is getting employees who are fully committed to helping us and our farmer-owners transition into this new era."
The Shift Towards AI and Data-Driven Farming
Landus Cooperative is poised to implement innovative data aggregation and analysis systems that leverage AI, which is expected to transform how farmers monitor and manage their crops. The new technology will allow Landus to conduct between eight to twelve aerial surveys per field, utilizing drones, airplanes, or satellites to gather crucial data on crop health and yield predictions.
“This approach will enable us to provide farmers with detailed insights on every inch of their field, helping them to better understand how conditions are affecting their operations and profitability,” Carstens explained.
As the company integrates this cutting-edge technology, it will necessitate shifts across various departments within Landus. Many employees retain positions but will transition to new roles that reflect the evolving needs of the organization, starting Monday. Carstens assured that those affected by layoffs would receive a severance package based on their tenure and access to career services for job placement.

Despite the layoffs, Carstens stated that there are no immediate plans to close any facilities or make further cuts in response to the restructuring. Instead, the focus remains on building a dedicated team ready to embrace the changes ahead.
