Google Expands AI Overviews with New Features
Google is set to take its AI Overviews feature to the next level. Recently announced, these AI-generated summaries will soon be equipped to handle more intricate topics and a variety of search queries, including challenging math problems and coding tasks. This hefty upgrade comes with the introduction of the Gemini 2.0 model, which Google boasts will improve both the speed and quality of search results.
This week marks the beginning of a limited test phase for the revamped AI Overviews, with a broader rollout slated for early next year. Google CEO Sundar Pichai shared an exciting insight into the feature’s reach, stating, “Our AI Overviews now reach 1 billion people, enabling them to ask entirely new types of questions — quickly becoming one of our most popular Search features ever.” The company plans to expand this feature to more countries and languages in the coming year.

As AI continues to evolve, Google is keenly aware of the competition. The rise of AI-powered search engines like Perplexity and ChatGPT Search, which adeptly tackle math and programming inquiries, has prompted Google to enhance its core search capabilities.
However, AI Overviews haven’t been without their share of controversy. Since its launch earlier this year, users have pointed out several dubious suggestions, such as the questionable idea of adding glue to pizza. A recent report from SE Ranking indicated that AI Overviews sometimes references unreliable sources, which can include outdated studies and sponsored product listings. This hiccup arises from the AI’s occasional struggle to discern between fact and fiction, satire and seriousness.
In response to feedback, Google has tweaked how AI Overviews operate, particularly by restricting responses related to current events and health issues. Still, the tech giant admits that perfection is an ongoing pursuit.
Interestingly, despite these challenges, the use of AI Overviews has resulted in increased search engagement, particularly among the 18 to 24 age group—a demographic that’s particularly crucial for Google’s success.
Adding a layer of monetization, Google has begun inserting ads into AI Overviews for relevant queries on mobile devices. This move has sparked concerns among publishers, who claim it could diminish their website traffic. Google asserts it is taking these concerns seriously as it continues to develop its AI search functionalities.
It’s worth noting that AI Overviews have also caught the eye of regulators. The Justice Department’s ongoing antitrust lawsuit against Google includes scrutiny of these features, as it seeks to dismantle what has been deemed an illegal monopoly in search. The suit proposes that websites should have the option to opt-out of AI Overviews without facing penalties in search rankings.
