Champlain Valley Union High School’s Robohawks Gear Up for World Championships
HINESBURG, Vt. — Excitement is buzzing in the halls of Champlain Valley Union High School as the Robohawks, the school’s talented robotics team, prepares for an extraordinary journey to the FIRST Tech Challenge world championships next month in Houston, Texas. This dynamic group of nine students has been hard at work since September, crafting their robot to tackle this year’s unique challenge.
The competition requires teams to design and program robots that can pick up blocks from a central container and meticulously place them into elevated boxes. To sweeten the challenge, teams can also earn extra points by having their robots perform a pull-up on a sturdy metal bar—talk about a test of strength and design!
A Consistent Record of Excellence
This year is particularly special as it marks the fourth consecutive year that the Robohawks have qualified for the world championships. James Haines, the co-captain, shared his pride in the team’s achievements. “It’s really a testament to the strength of our program at CVU,” he said. “We do a great job of welcoming younger members each year and preparing them to step into key roles as seniors graduate. This continuity is vital for our success.”
Community Impact and Mentorship
But the Robohawks aren’t just about competition; they are deeply committed to making a positive impact in their community. The team’s outreach efforts extend to mentoring budding robotics enthusiasts in local schools, including those in Shelburne, Charlotte, and, of course, their hometown of Hinesburg. They have even taken on coaching roles at Williston Central School, fostering a love for robotics and engineering in the next generation.
Looking Ahead
As the Robohawks finalize their preparations for the championship, the anticipation continues to build. This blend of fierce competition, teamwork, and community involvement serves as an inspiration to many around Vermont and beyond.
It’s clear that the Robohawks embody not just the spirit of innovation and problem-solving but also a heartfelt dedication to uplifting others in their community. As they head to Houston, they carry with them the hopes and support of their school and local community.
