In a world shaped by innovation, from the lightbulb to the computers we use every day, the American spirit of creativity has led us to monumental achievements that have changed the course of history. These advancements didn’t arise from heavy-handed government mandates; rather, they flourished because business leaders and government officials worked hand-in-hand to nurture our nation’s finest innovators.
A New Era of Opportunity
Sometimes, it seems the folks in Washington, D.C., lose sight of a fundamental truth: new technologies are ripe with opportunity, not peril. Embracing innovation has empowered generations of entrepreneurs, enhancing health, creating sustainable jobs, and driving our nation’s success.
With the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), we stand at another pivotal moment. To thrive in the future, we must adhere to two guiding principles: ensuring access to affordable, reliable energy while avoiding suffocating regulations in favor of smart governance for AI and digital technologies. By striking this balance, the United States can solidify its role as a leader in tomorrow’s industries.
Real-World AI Integration
As the chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, I’ve had the privilege of speaking with manufacturers, builders, and farmers who are already harnessing AI to boost productivity and enhance worker safety. It’s exhilarating to observe the transformative potential of AI across various sectors—from healthcare innovations that detect diseases earlier, to autonomous vehicles poised to reduce human error-related accidents, and robust cybersecurity measures that protect our critical infrastructure.
However, to enable AI applications on a large scale, we need a regulatory environment that fosters flexibility and innovation. While it’s crucial to safeguard against harmful uses of AI, such as malicious deepfakes, we must be cautious not to overwhelm the industry with redundant regulations. Innovation—not regulation—will determine our success in AI development.
The Future of Energy
To power the AI revolution, we must also recognize the pressing need for increased energy production. This new wave of AI technologies demands extensive energy resources, necessitating a transformation in how we generate consistent and affordable electricity.
By 2028, the dramatic scaling of AI data centers will require the U.S. to double or even triple our current electricity load growth. In recent months, our committee has hosted numerous hearings focused on boosting energy availability, fortifying our grid, and evaluating the implications for the emerging AI economy.
A key part of this approach is permitting reform. Today, 40% of our nation’s electric generation relies on natural gas, yet outdated processes can hamper necessary progress. For instance, it took an act of Congress to complete the last significant natural gas pipeline in our country. When we harness our energy production, we foster a more prosperous and secure America—effectively countering adversaries like the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Staying Ahead of Global Competition
In navigating the complicated landscape of AI and energy, we have powerful tools to confront threats from adversarial nations. As other nations, particularly China, seek to dominate AI through methods that infringe on human rights and disadvantage American workers, we must act decisively. If we fail to secure our leadership in AI, we risk ceding the ground not only in this critical field but across all sectors that depend on it.
We have the chance to drive innovation, create jobs, and rejuvenate our industries through AI. The choice is clear: the United States must lead the AI race to secure a competitive edge and avoid lagging behind in a technology that influences every aspect of society.
As we move forward, our Committee on Energy and Commerce is committed to facilitating dialogues, drafting meaningful legislation, and collaborating with industry leaders, energy providers, and regulators. Together, we aim to ensure that AI development aligns with the needs of the American public.
The Promise of Progress
President Donald Trump has already spearheaded investments in the order of hundreds of billions, positioning America toward global leadership in this crucial time. While it’s warranted to implement some smart protections, the future economy will fundamentally hinge on AI and the energy that powers it. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity we cannot allow to slip through our fingers.
