Elon Musk Backs California’s SB 1047 AI Safety Bill
Elon Musk has expressed his support for California’s SB 1047, a legislative proposal aimed at imposing safeguards on the development of exceptionally large AI models to prevent severe harm.
In a post on X, Musk stated, “This is a tough call and will make some people upset, but, all things considered, I think California should probably pass the SB 1047 AI safety bill.” He underscored his long-standing commitment to AI regulation, drawing parallels to the oversight of any product or technology that poses potential risks, a concern he’s championed for over two decades.
Musk’s own AI company, xAI, would need to adhere to the requirements laid out in SB 1047, despite his recent decision to relocate from California. His history of caution regarding the risks of uncontrolled AI development adds weight to his endorsement of the bill.
In contrast, OpenAI, a major competitor in the AI field, has publicly opposed SB 1047, advocating for a different legislative approach to address AI safety.
