MediaTek Launches Innovative Genio 720 and Genio 520 IoT Platforms
Today at the Embedded World conference, MediaTek unveiled their latest advancements in edge-AI IoT technology with the introduction of the Genio 720 and Genio 520 platforms. These powerful new entries are designed to empower smart devices across various sectors, including smart home, retail, industrial, and commercial IoT applications.
Pushing the Boundaries of AI Performance
The Genio 720 and Genio 520 boast impressive capabilities, achieving up to 10 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second) thanks to their built-in MediaTek 8th-generation Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This NPU ensures full hardware acceleration for complex models like transformers and convolutional neural networks (CNNs). With memory support of up to 16GB of LPDDR5, these platforms can handle data-heavy, edge-optimized large language models (LLMs) such as Llama, Gemini, Phi, and DeepSeek, all while expediting generative AI tasks.
CK Wang, the General Manager of MediaTek’s IoT Business Group, highlights the platforms as a gateway to a new era of IoT innovation. He states, “The Genio 720 and Genio 520 will unleash powerful yet efficient generative AI capabilities on-device, offering a seamless user experience that also ensures data privacy.” The integration of NVIDIA TAO and popular AI models further allows developers to scale their designs across a variety of applications, spanning from smart retail displays to complex industrial human-machine interface (HMI) setups.
Engineering Excellence and Efficiency
Built on a cutting-edge 6nm process node, the Genio 720 and Genio 520 feature an octa-core CPU that consists of two Arm Cortex-A78 processors and six Cortex-A55 processors. This architecture optimizes both performance and power efficiency, making these IoT platforms ideal for mobile devices that demand fanless operations and battery efficiency.
Multimedia Features Tailored for Today’s Needs
With advanced multimedia capabilities, the Genio 720 and Genio 520 are perfect for commercial displays and smart retail devices, as well as applications requiring interactive or multi-window experiences. The unified design allows developers to write code once and deploy it across multiple platforms while enabling customization to suit specific project demands.
OSM Support for Faster Development
One standout feature of the Genio 720 and Genio 520 is their support for Open Standard Module (OSM), alongside reference designs that help ensure power and signal integrity. This feature significantly shortens the development cycle, allowing MediaTek’s partners to introduce OSM solutions based on these platforms in the second half of this year, leading to faster deployment across various applications.
Key Features at a Glance:
- Display Support: One 4K/5K ultrawide display or dual 2.5K displays
- Video Capabilities: Power-efficient 4K H.264/H.265 video decoding and encoding
- Image Processing: Dual ISP supporting 16+16/32MP at 30fps
