MediaTek Takes a Leap into Generative AI with New IoT Platforms
NUREMBERG, Germany – On March 11, 2025, MediaTek made waves at Embedded World by unveiling its powerful Genio 720 and Genio 520 edge-AI IoT platforms. Tailored for diverse IoT applications in smart homes, retail, and industrial settings, these latest offerings embody the future of generative AI technology.
Performance Meets Innovation
The Genio 720 and Genio 520 are not just incremental upgrades; they’re designed to deliver impressive edge performance with capabilities peaking at 10 TOPS. This is made possible by MediaTek’s 8th-generation Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that accelerates performance for both transformer and convolutional neural network (CNN) models. Imagine running complex AI tasks right at the edge, reducing latency and enhancing user privacy—this is the reality with these platforms.
Powerful Capabilities
These new platforms sport robust memory performance, featuring up to 16GB of LPDDR5 memory, which is essential for data-heavy applications like large language models (LLMs), including prominent examples like Llama, Gemini, and DeepSeek. This kind of muscle not only boosts generative AI tasks but also paves the way for innovation in various verticals.
“With the Genio 720 and Genio 520, we’re stepping into a new era of IoT innovation,” said CK Wang, General Manager of MediaTek’s IoT Business Group. “These platforms provide powerful, on-device generative AI capabilities, ensuring a seamless experience while safeguarding user data.”
Technical Highlights
Crafted on a 6nm process node, these platforms integrate an octa-core CPU, consisting of two Arm Cortex-A78 cores paired with six Cortex-A55 cores, striking an ideal balance between performance and power efficiency. Perfect for portable devices that require battery power and fanless designs, the Genio 720 and Genio 520 don’t compromise on energy usage.
The advanced multimedia features make these devices particularly suited for a range of applications, including commercial displays and smart retail solutions. Thanks to their unified hardware and software design, developers can create applications that work seamlessly across varied device configurations, enhancing flexibility in design.
