SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – At its Ignite conference, Microsoft revealed exciting advancements in data center technology, announcing the development of two new infrastructure chips aimed at enhancing artificial intelligence operations and bolstering data security.
Custom Silicon for Tailored Performance
Microsoft is all in on the idea that creating its own silicon can lead to better performance and cost savings—a strategy shared by industry giants like Amazon and Google. By designing custom chips specifically suited for Microsoft’s needs, the company aims to lessen its dependency on established processor manufacturers like Intel and Nvidia. The two new chips are set to be integrated deeply within Microsoft’s data center framework. One, called the Azure Integrated HSM, is a security chip designed to protect critical encryption and security data, ensuring it remains secure within the hardware module. Every new server in Microsoft’s data centers will feature this chip starting next year, reflecting the company’s commitment to ensuring that data remains safe.
On the other hand, the Data Processing Unit (DPU) consolidates various server components onto a single chip, specifically optimized for cloud storage tasks. Remarkably, this chip is expected to operate with three times less power consumption while delivering four times the performance of current hardware.

In addition to these chips, Microsoft is making waves with its innovative liquid cooling system for data center servers. This updated cooling unit is engineered to efficiently manage temperatures around high-capacity setups, particularly beneficial for large-scale AI systems.
