Samsung to Introduce Grocery Shopping Feature on AI-Enabled Refrigerators
Samsung is stepping up the game in smart home technology by integrating grocery-buying capabilities directly into its AI-enabled refrigerators. Imagine standing in front of your Bespoke fridge and restocking your groceries right from the screen! This innovative feature will be available to U.S. customers and is a product of a new "multi-year" partnership with the online grocery service Instacart.
A Smart Solution for Busy Lives
This upcoming feature relies on Samsung’s proprietary food recognition technology, combined with Instacart’s product-matching API, allowing users to conveniently shop for groceries without leaving their kitchen. Set to launch on the 2025 Bespoke refrigerators, these models will boast various types of screens and enhanced "AI Vision Inside" technology.
Existing owners of the AI Family Hub+ refrigerators will also get this exciting update. Samsung has confirmed that qualifying older models equipped with the food recognition tech will receive the feature through an over-the-network update later this year, although the exact schedule is still being finalized.
Embracing the Future of Grocery Shopping
Jeong Seung Moon, Samsung Electronics’ head executive, expressed enthusiasm over this collaboration, stating, "The combination of Samsung’s key technology and Instacart’s outstanding online grocery shopping platform will be a great example of how partnership can create a new level of convenience." This partnership marks another stride for Samsung, as it continuously works to enhance user experiences by collaborating with other innovative technology leaders.
How It Works
Samsung’s "AI Vision Inside" technology is already a fantastic tool for fridge owners, tracking what is and isn’t in stock. It uses sophisticated cameras and deep-learning models to identify over three dozen common food items. For items that aren’t recognized, users can manually input their names and expiration dates.
Once the new feature is active, U.S. customers with Samsung Bespoke fridges will need to set up both Samsung and Instacart accounts and ensure they have a Wi-Fi connection. They also must reside in areas where Instacart operates to take full advantage of this new convenience.
New Models and Future Launches
Among the upcoming models, the 32-inch AI Family Hub+ and the new 9-inch AI Home refrigerator will debut this feature in 2025. The latter is expected to be showcased at CES 2025, taking place from January 7 to January 10. Samsung describes the 9-inch AI Home as the perfect blend of compactness and advanced features found in Family Hub models, catering to various consumer needs.
The Outlook
As the kitchen becomes a central hub in modern homes, innovations like Samsung’s grocery-buying feature represent how technology can make life more convenient. With the rise of smart appliances, households can anticipate a future where managing groceries is as easy as a tap on the refrigerator screen.
