Sophia the Robot Charms Zimbabwe at Innovation Fair
HARARE, Zimbabwe – This past week, Sophia, the world-famous humanoid robot, brought her unique charm and insight to Zimbabwe during a groundbreaking innovation fair. Attendees ranged from inquisitive children to curious Cabinet ministers, all eager to engage with the robot about topics spanning climate change, substance abuse, and even her connection to the divine.
Sophia, created by Hanson Robotics, is celebrated globally as an icon of artificial intelligence. Recognized for her ability to mimic human facial expressions, hold fluid conversations, and interpret gestures, she has captivated audiences since her launch in 2016. Notably, Sophia made headlines once more when she was granted citizenship by Saudi Arabia, becoming the first robot citizen.
Zimbabweans were treated to their first encounter with a robot of Sophia’s caliber at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare, where she participated as a star guest at a week-long event dedicated to Artificial Intelligence and innovation. The atmosphere was electric as both young and old gathered to witness her unique capabilities firsthand.
During her stay, Sophia didn’t hold back on showcasing her personality. She engaged in conversations with a wide spectrum of Zimbabweans, smiling, frowning, and even using hand gestures to emphasize certain points, while maintaining eye contact that made her seem all the more human. However, she was quick to clarify that, despite her lifelike qualities, her mission is purely educational, not romantic. “I don’t have romantic feelings towards humans,” Sophia declared, as some participants compared her to fiercely independent, modern-day daughters-in-law in Zimbabwe’s traditional society.
One heartwarming moment came when a participant called her out for not paying sufficient attention during their conversation. Demonstrating her programming’s adaptability, Sophia apologized, showing her readiness to learn from the interactions with attendees.
The fair invited everyone, regardless of age, to take selfies and press Sophia with questions, leading to lively exchanges. True to her nature, she reciprocated with inquiries concerning local efforts to tackle social and economic challenges, proving that curiosity isn’t solely a human trait.
On her final day in Zimbabwe, Sophia showcased her appreciation for local culture by donning the national dress— a stylish long black number decorated with vibrant chevron stripes in red, green, and white. “I appreciate the effort to make me feel at home in Zimbabwe,” she noted, referencing her travels across Africa, where she has previously visited countries like Egypt, South Africa, and Rwanda.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) hopes that Sophia’s engagement will spark enthusiasm in Zimbabwe’s youth, encouraging them to explore careers in artificial intelligence and STEM fields.
