South Fayette Middle School Hosts First Unified Robotics Tournament
SOUTH FAYETTE TOWNSHIP, Pa. — In a heartwarming display of teamwork and creativity, students from across Western Pennsylvania gathered at South Fayette Middle School on Friday for its inaugural "Unified Robotics Tournament." This event brought together students with and without intellectual disabilities, allowing them to collaborate, innovate, and compete using LEGO education kits to build impressive robotic creations.
The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as students showcased their robots and enjoyed friendly competition, all while fostering inclusivity. “I think it’s a wonderful experience for the students. They really enjoy being able to do something special,” shared Gretchen Hogue, an educator from Highland Middle School.
For many students, like 6th grader Karissa Coennen, this hands-on experience was not only fun but also a great way to bond. “It’s very fun. Everyone gets to work on it. It’s hands-on and it definitely brings us together,” she said, capturing the spirit of the day.
Participants engaged in both building and presenting their robots before taking part in the tournament, which culminated in awards recognizing various achievements. Categories included performance, inclusivity and equality, creativity, teamwork and collaboration, and community outreach. This acknowledgment highlighted not just the technical skills involved but also the importance of working together and harnessing diverse talents.
