Navigating the Intersection of AI and Music: A New Era for Creativity
Suno CEO Mikey Shulman recently found himself at Berklee College of Music, a venue that feels like walking into the lion’s den for the leader of a generative AI music company. Speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt 2024, Shulman acknowledged the mixed feelings many musicians have about AI. “You have to approach this carefully,” he noted. Instead of dodging the subject, he jumped right in and invited students to use Suno to create music with AI.
Embracing the AI Toolset
Shulman highlighted how exploring AI can open up a new realm of possibilities for musicians. “Using it is actually quite empowering when you view it from a different angle,” he shared. In an age where tools like drum machines and synthesizers have transformed music-making, AI is just another addition to the creative toolbox. While some artists express concerns that these tools might encroach on their creativity or livelihood, others see them as a natural evolution of the art form.
“Tell me how photography is less valuable now than it was fifty years ago,” Shulman challenged. As people around him snapped pictures with their smartphones, it was clear that technology evolves and becomes more accessible over time. Luma AI CEO Amit Jain echoed this sentiment, stating, “Technology isn’t complete until it’s in the hands of everyone.”
The Role of Professionalism
Digital photography has become ubiquitous, yet there remains a stark difference between a professional shoot and a quick smartphone snap. Jain believes that those with taste and skill will always stand out. “Creativity will flourish as more tools become available,” he assured.
Meanwhile, companies like Splice, which have served musicians for years, are now incorporating AI to enhance the creative process. “Our new AI-based tools are designed to elevate our customers’ craft,” said Kakul Srivastava, CEO of Splice.
Industry Reactions: A Divided Landscape
The response to these innovations within the entertainment industry has been mixed. While Hollywood writers have campaigned for job security against the encroachment of AI, the music scene faces its own challenges. Suno has attracted legal implications for allegedly using unlicensed songs in its training datasets. However, the presence of high-profile artists like Timbaland, who serves as a strategic advisor to Suno, suggests a more open-minded approach to AI’s role in music creation.
“Will there be job losses? Maybe. But I believe we’ll see more art created because more people can express themselves,” Srivastava stated optimistically.
Looking Ahead
AI is transforming the landscape of creativity, offering tools that can empower both new and established artists. As we observe the ongoing dialogue between tradition and innovation, it’s exciting to think about where this technology will take us next.
